Information for Law Graduates

As we look forward to celebrating a milestone that reflects years of rigorous study, steadfast determination, and an unwavering commitment to justice, the Law Commencement Team aims to keep graduates informed, prepared, and confident in the days leading up to the ceremony.

Graduates may refer to the FAQs below and the latest issue of the Grad Newsletter sent to their SCU email.

I am receiving my MBA. Do I cross the stage twice?
Students with multiple degrees will be recognized in their respective Commencement Programs. JD/MBA students may choose to opt in for the Business School ceremony. More information can be found on the University Commencement webpage

When will I receive my diploma?
On stage, you will receive your diploma cover. If you have no holds on your account and successfully return your rented academic attire, your diploma will be mailed to you by the Office of the Registrar once the completion of academic requirements has been verified. Mailings begin 3-4 months after the degree completion date. Please be sure to review your name and mailing address before graduation.

If you have additional questions regarding your diploma (name changes, damage, change of address, etc.), please contact the Office of the Registrar.

What is the Commencement format?
The day before the Commencement ceremony, the law school will host a Liturgical Mass to honor the graduating class. Everyone is welcome to attend this celebration.

Santa Clara Law will hold its traditional Commencement Ceremony at the Leavey Center on the Santa Clara University campus. Please note that the stage crossing during the ceremony will not be live-streamed but will be recorded and made available for later viewing.

The Dean’s Celebration of Spirit and Excellence is an invitation-only award ceremony hosted before the liturgy. The Dean’s Office will contact student honorees to share event details and guest information.

What time will the doors open for the Commencement Ceremony?
Doors will open at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday.

How long is the Commencement Ceremony?
The ceremony lasts approximately 2 hours.

What time do graduates need to check in before the ceremony?

Graduates should be checked in and ready to line up by 8:15 am. Plan to arrive at least 45 minutes early to give yourself time to adjust your regalia and check in with the Law Commencement Team.

What should I bring on Commencement day?

Graduates should plan to travel lightly on Commencement day. Utilize your lockers or give personal belongings to your guests. Storage will not be available for backpacks or purses. Don't forget to bring your gown, hood, tam, and tassel!

What is the Tassel portal?
The Tassel portal is where graduates will register for the Commencement ceremony and manage guest tickets. Graduates will receive an email with login information, and can log in here

How do I claim tickets for my guests?

When completing the registration form on Tassel, graduates will be given the opportunity to select the number of guest tickets they would like to claim. Those tickets will be available in the portal and can be sent via email to the graduate (for easier printing and distributing to loved ones) or directly to guests.

How many tickets do graduates receive?
Each graduate will receive eight (8) guest tickets for the Commencement ceremony and will be responsible for distributing those tickets to their guests.

Graduates will be required to provide their guests’ names and email addresses. Guests can access their tickets via email and must have a screenshot or printed copy of their ticket to be admitted to the ceremony.

Do all guests need tickets to be admitted?

All guests are required to have valid tickets printed or available on their mobile devices.  Children 2 years of age and under do not require a ticket.

How do I get my regalia?

Graduates may rent their gown and purchase accessories (hood, tam, and tassel) as early as the first week of April from the SCU Campus Store.  There is no need to pre-order a gown. Graduates will provide their name and height at the bookstore to receive their attire.

Note: Students are expected to return gowns to the Campus Store after commencement (may be returned the same day or shortly after). Failure to return gowns to the bookstore will result in a hold and will delay the shipment of your diploma.

Where can I purchase grad announcements?
You can purchase Santa Clara Law grad announcements through Balfour's site. They also have rings available for purchase online.

Where can I purchase a diploma frame?

Diploma frames can be purchased online or in person at the SCU Campus Store

Will graduates be professionally photographed?
Professional photographers will be present at the ceremony. Photos taken by photographers will be available on the Santa Clara Law Flickr or via GradImages if students opt in.
