Santa Clara University allows limited drone (UAS) use for academic, research, and University operations, with advance approval.
Key Requirements
All drone flights must:
- Support an SCU-sponsored activity
- Be operated by an FAA Part 107 certified pilot
- Receive prior University approval
- Comply with FAA regulations and airspace restrictions
Because SCU is located next to San José Mineta International Airport (SJC), most flights also require FAA airspace authorization.
Request a Flight
All drone flights must be approved in advance.
Prepare to provide the following information when submitting your request for a drone flight:
- Pilot's License Number
- FAA DroneZone Registration Number
- Drone Information, including:
- Drone Type
- Platform Type
- Date of Last Inspection
- Use of Autopilot (requires special approval)
- Use of LiPo Batteries (requires special approval)
- Flight Information, including:
- Coordinates
- Maximum Altitude
- Date and Time of Flight
- Proof of Airspace Authorization for the Flight
Not Permitted
- Recreational or hobby drone use on campus
- Unauthorized drone flights
- Operations that pose safety or privacy risks
